For flight instructors and RT tutors
A free instructor account for teaching RT
Radio work is the part of training students practise least between lessons. TowerTalk gives them an AI controller to practise with, graded against CAP 413, and gives you the graded record, live lesson rooms and a training record an examiner can check.
What an instructor gets
Free for you
An instructor account costs nothing: the dashboard, the instructor tools and the practice itself — exercises, scenarios and the AI controller at UK aerodromes.
Your students' progress
Each student's graded calls, scores and weak areas in one place, graded against CAP 413, so a lesson starts from what they actually said.
Instructor tools
Comment on a student's work, set them a scenario to practise, keep notes, and add your own teaching material as practice content.
Live lesson rooms
Run a shared frequency with a student and take the controller's seat yourself. Hosting a lesson room needs a verified instructor account.
Seats, if you want them
A student can hold a plan of their own, or you give them a seat: £11.99 per student a month, or £10.99 for every seat once you have 10 or more. A student on a seat has full access, live lesson rooms included.
A record an examiner can check
A PDF training record of a student's exercises, mock exams and lessons with you, with a verification code an examiner can check online. If you are responsible for their training, you can sign SRG1171 Section 4 in TowerTalk.
Verification
Add your certificate to your account and TowerTalk staff check it. A verified instructor account needs one of these, checked and in date:
- an instructor certificate — FI(A), FI (restricted), CRI, IRI or another instructor certificate;
- an examiner authorisation — FE or FRTOL examiner;
- for ground and theory tutors, an AOPA Ground Instructor Certificate or a letter from an ATO or DTO appointing you as a ground instructor.
A teaching qualification on its own does not count. Until you are verified, the account works like a student's free account: you cannot host lesson rooms or be listed in Find a tutor, where staff approve every listing. “Checked by TowerTalk” means our staff looked at what you sent; it is not a CAA approval.
Lesson fees
Lessons with a student who already has a plan, a pass or a seat cost you nothing. Lesson time with a student who has none is billed to you, the instructor, monthly — not to the student. Each student's first 60 minutes with any instructor are free, once per account. After that, per lesson:
up to 30 min £2.50 · to 1 hr £4.99 · to 1 hr 30 £7.49 · to 2 hrs £9.99 · each further 30 min £2.50
Time counts only while you and the student are both in the lesson room, in 30-minute blocks with 5 minutes' grace. Whether you recover the charge from your student is between you and them; before each lesson you are both shown how it works.
The reward month
When a student's paid lesson time reaches 6 half-hours within 30 days, the student is given 30 days of full access, once per account — practice between your lessons at no extra cost to either of you.
How to sign up
- Create an account and, under “Which describes you?”, choose I teach (instructor or school).
- Add your instructor certificate or authorisation so our staff can check it.
- Invite your students, give seats if you want to, and open a lesson room when you are verified.
Running a school?
TowerTalk for flight schools covers several instructors, seats across a school and links for your syllabus. See also SRG1171 explained and how TowerTalk grades a call.
TowerTalk is a training aid. It is not approved by the CAA, it is not the FRTOL practical test, and it does not replace your instruction or an examiner's assessment. Practice is written against CAP 413 (Edition 24).
