Radio calls at Elstree
Elstree is an air/ground station, so the callsign is “Elstree Radio”. The operator passes information about the aerodrome and what they can see. No clearances, no instructions, and no traffic service — every decision is yours. The exchange below follows CAP 413 Edition 24 §4.153.
Before taxi
Elstree Radio 122.405
Elstree Radio, G-ABCD, radio check one two two decimal four zero five and request taxi information.
G-ABCD, Elstree Radio, readability five, runway zero eight, QNH one zero one five.
“Taxi information”, not “taxi”: at an air/ground station you are told what is in use, and whether and when to taxi is your decision — the operator never says “at your discretion” (CAP 413 Edition 24 §4.152). A radio check is the station, your callsign, the words “radio check” and the frequency you are on (§2.93).
Readback
122.405
G-ABCD, readability five also, taxiing for runway zero eight, QNH one zero one five.
G-CD, roger.
You say what you are doing — “taxiing for” — and the runway and pressure setting are read back (§2.69). “Roger” is all that comes back.
Ready
122.405
G-CD, ready for departure.
G-CD, roger, no reported traffic, surface wind two one zero degrees eight knots.
Nobody clears you for take-off. You are told the traffic and the wind, and the decision is yours.
Taking off
122.405
Roger, taking off, G-CD.
Tell the operator what you are doing, as CAP 413 §4.153 shows.
Downwind
122.405
G-CD, downwind.
G-CD, roger.
Final
122.405
G-CD, final.
G-CD, roger, surface wind two three zero degrees one zero knots.
An air/ground operator does not say “land at your discretion” and cannot clear you. “Roger” and the wind is the whole of it.
Vacated
122.405
G-CD, runway vacated.
G-CD, roger.
