Radio calls at Rochester

Rochester has a Flight Information Service, so the station is “Rochester Information”. An AFIS gives you information and traffic, not instructions: nobody clears you to land, and the decision is yours.

  1. Initial call

    Rochester Information 122.255

    Rochester Information, G-ABCD.

G-ABCD, Rochester Information, pass your message.

  2. Passing your message

    122.255

G-ABCD, Cessna 152, 5 miles south, 2,000 feet on QNH one zero one five, inbound to land, request joining instructions.

G-ABCD, runway zero two left, QNH one zero one five, two aircraft in the circuit, report overhead.

The runway and QNH are read back. “Report overhead” is answered “Wilco”.

  3. Overhead join

    122.255

Runway two three, QNH one zero one five, wilco, G-CD.

An AFIS cannot clear you to join — it tells you the runway and what else is about, and you position yourself.

  4. Downwind

    122.255

    G-CD, downwind.

G-CD, roger, number two to a Cessna on base.

  5. Final

    122.255

    G-CD, final.

G-CD, roger, surface wind two four zero degrees eight knots, land at your discretion.

“Land at your discretion”, never “cleared to land” — that is the difference an examiner listens for.

  6. Vacated

    122.255

    G-CD, runway vacated.

G-CD, roger, taxi at your discretion.
